As Monica sat by Janet's bed, she knew it was time to say good-bye, they were both in their eighties, Janet was older by three months. Monica held her hand and Janet opened her eyes.
"Do not be sad please." Janet said looking at Monica.
"The doctor said I should come and say my good bye and last night I wrote you a letter." Monica said as she removed a small piece of paper from her red photo album.
"It is okay Monica, a good bye will be good." Janet said as a tear ran down her eyes, she could not believe it that within hours her long time best friend will be no more.
Monica opened the letter as nurses doctors and some of their friends entered the room.
To My Dearest Janet
It is time to say good bye. We meet at a ballet class when we were ten and have been friends for seventy years. We played together every Sunday at the neighbourhood park. All I want to say is
Thank you for being my best friend you for always being there for me. Thank for the memories, we celebrated birthdays together and our teenage years together, we fought over a boy, we had our first drink, smoked, we got busted for sneaking out at night, got grounded for a month when our parents found out we skived school, we got matching tattoos , we went clubbing without our parents knowledge and we went to each others prom.
We both went to university despite our hectic lives you doing journalism and me doing Criminal law we managed keeping in touch through letters as time went by we managed graduating you moved to the interstate and I moved to Washington DC. But this never stopped us from keeping in touch.
Your wedding was beautiful and grand, thanks for making me your maid of honour and I am sorry I did not tell you I eloped without my parents knowledge and sorry for making a scene at your wedding, should have not used your wedding as a place to tell my parents I eloped. Thank you for forgiving me.
We were mummy buddies, we got pregnant the same time and I want you to thank you for your support when Melisa was unwell and she and Lisa are best friends now.
You where there for me when Alan divorced me and I was there for you when Pete passed away in the plane crash. Thank for being there for me.
Our daughters behaved like us as teenagers and we were stressed out, thanks for the late night adventure and late night phone calls.
Thanks for letting me spend time with your grandkids Pete and Mathew, two naughty boys.
Until we meet again I say Goodbye to my best friend
Lots of love Monica
As Janet folded the paper the doctors and nurses clapped, as one nurse helped Janet on her feet to hug Monica,
"Good bye my best friend." Janet said as tears rolled down her eyes as she hugged Monica.
