Samantha losses her high paying job in New York Law firm due to the financial crises in the state. Due to her losing her job she moves to a small town in Virginia where she volunteers as a lawyers in a small Aid Clinic where she helps poor clients who cannot afford lawyers.
The town is well know for its coal and it is slowly diminishing due to big companies buying land for the coal and destroying the workers health, Samantha befriends Donavan who is a well known lawyer who is hated by the Coal companies because he defends the town people, He gets murdered and Samantha gets involved with the FBI.
The book gets interesting when Donavan gets murdered there is where the suspense began for me,
- "She loved Manhattan and could not imagine living anywhere else, but her world was upside down now, and, well, there was nothing certain in her future"
- “The relief came from the sudden realization that she had just been freed from a job she despised”
- "You just don’t understand men, Samantha. Looking is automatic and it’s harmless. We all look. Come on.”
